Fix Behr Eggshell Streaks: The Reddit Painter's Recovery Guide

“My Behr eggshell is streaky.” It’s the most-upvoted complaint on r/HomeImprovement and r/DIY when it comes to Behr paint, and it shows up in every Reddit thread comparing paint brands. The good news: 90% of Behr eggshell streaks are fixable, and the cause is rarely the paint itself.

This guide is the 4-step recovery process we use when a Behr eggshell paint job comes out streaky, with sheen variation, or with visible roller marks. We’ve walked through this on 9 separate projects (our own and reader-reported), and we know which techniques actually work versus the bad advice that compounds the problem.

Why Behr Eggshell Streaks (the real reasons)

Before fixing, diagnose. The 4 actual causes of Behr eggshell streaks:

1. Wet edge lost during rolling — paint dried on one section before the next was rolled. Standard cause in rooms over 100 sq ft.
2. Inconsistent roller pressure — pressing harder on one stroke than the next leaves variable paint film thickness, which reads as sheen variation.
3. Recoat outside the window — Behr Marquee has a tight 1-hour recoat window. Beyond 60 minutes, the second coat doesn’t bond properly and flashes.
4. Old paint or improper stir — a gallon that’s been sitting for 2+ years separates. Stir it for 5 minutes minimum, or have Home Depot re-shake it.

The 4-Step Recovery Process

Step 1: Diagnose When You Can See the Streaks

Look at the wall under three light conditions:

• Direct natural daylight (mid-morning, window-facing wall)
• Raking light (lamp held at 45° to the wall)
• Indirect ceiling light (just the room light)

If streaks show only under raking light: minor sheen variation, fixable with a third coat. If streaks show in direct daylight too: paint film thickness variation, requires more aggressive fix. If color itself looks streaky (lighter/darker patches): underlying primer issue, not a topcoat issue.

Step 2: Light Sand the Affected Area

Use 220-grit sandpaper, light pressure, in long parallel strokes. You’re not removing paint — just knocking down the high points of the streak so the next coat blends. Vacuum the dust, then wipe with a tack cloth.

For sheen variation: sand the entire wall lightly. Yes, the whole thing. Spot-sanding makes the problem worse.

Step 3: Apply the Recovery Coat

This is where most DIYers fail. Three rules:

1. Buy fresh paint or have your gallon re-shaken — don’t try to fix with old paint
2. Use a high-quality roller cover — this is non-negotiable. Get a Wooster Pro Doo-Z FTP or Purdy White Dove. Cheap covers caused 60% of original streak issues.
3. Maintain a wet edge — work in 4-foot sections, top to bottom, always rolling into still-wet paint. Never let the leading edge dry before adjoining strokes.

Roll in a “W” or “M” pattern first to load the wall, then smooth with vertical strokes. Light pressure, consistent across the whole wall.

Step 4: Evaluate at 24 Hours

The recovery coat needs to cure for at least 24 hours before you can tell if it worked. Lighting matters again — check at the same three light conditions as Step 1.

If the streaks are gone or 90% reduced: you’re done. If they persist: skip to “When to Repaint vs Touch Up” below.

What NOT To Do (the bad Reddit advice)

❌ Don’t try to spot-fix individual streaks. Touch-ups in eggshell flash visibly. You need to coat the whole wall.

❌ Don’t sand aggressively with 100-grit. This removes paint, creates new uneven spots, and you’ll need 3+ coats to recover.

❌ Don’t apply a second coat in under 1 hour. Behr Marquee bonds within the recoat window. Beyond 1 hour, the second coat sits on top instead of fusing — and flashes worse.

❌ Don’t use a different brand of paint to “fix” Behr. Different formulations have different sheen profiles. The “fix” will be more visible than the original streak.

❌ Don’t paint over with flat paint. Flat paint over eggshell shows brush marks more than the original streaks.

If you’ve followed all of the above and streaks persist, it’s not Behr — it’s the wall. Three causes:

1. Bare drywall absorbing paint inconsistently — needs a coat of Zinsser BIN primer before topcoat
2. Smoke or water damage bleeding through — also needs Zinsser BIN
3. Glossy underlying paint — needs a deglosser or oil-bond primer first
