Behr Marquee was launched in 2014 as Behr's flagship "premium" line — explicitly positioned to compete with Benjamin Moore Regal Select and Aura at a Home Depot price point. The formulation is one-part 100% acrylic latex (not a hybrid alkyd, not a two-part) with a high pigment-volume concentration (PVC) that translates to better hide per coat than mid-tier paints.

The marketing claim that put Marquee on the map was "one-coat color guarantee" — Behr promises that any color in the Marquee Color Center palette will cover in one coat, or they refund your gallon. That's a real, executable warranty (we've seen Home Depot honor it on color-shift situations), and it's enabled by the higher solids content.

In hand, a gallon of Marquee feels noticeably heavier than Premium Plus or generic store-brand paints — that's the higher solids content. It pours thicker but levels beautifully on the wall thanks to a tuned rheology profile. The recoat dry time is a fast 1-2 hours, but the proper recoat window is also short — bond strength to the previous coat begins to drop after about 60 minutes.

What "One-Coat Coverage" Actually Means

The one-coat guarantee covers like-tone repaints (going from beige to a similar beige, or white to a slightly different white). It does not cover dramatic color shifts (white to navy, dark red to white) — those still require 2 coats. In our 5 projects, we hit one-coat coverage in 4 of 5 like-tone scenarios. The one exception was a dark navy accent wall, which needed a tinted primer plus 2 coats of Marquee for full coverage.

Stain resistance comes from a polymer additive that creates a tight surface seal on the cured paint film. The result: water-based stains (coffee, juice, food), grease, and even crayon marks generally wipe off with a damp cloth and don't set into the paint. We tested this directly — see Test 2 below.

Real-World Performance Testing

Each project was scored on coverage (one-coat success rate), durability (visual wear after 4-6 months), and stain/scuff resistance. Test 1: Dark Navy Accent Wall (BM Hale Navy → Marquee White Soft Light)

The hardest test. Going from a dark cured wall to white normally requires a tinted primer plus 2 coats. We tried 1 coat of Marquee straight over the cured navy — result: noticeable navy ghost still visible after 1 coat. We added a Behr-tinted gray primer and 2 coats of Marquee for full coverage. Test 2: Kitchen Coffee/Tomato/Grease Wash Test

We deliberately splattered three test areas with coffee, tomato sauce, and bacon grease — let them sit for 24 hours — then wiped with a damp microfiber. Result: all three stains wiped clean without visible residue. Aura did slightly better on the bacon grease (no halo at all); Marquee left a very faint halo that disappeared after a second wipe. This stain resistance is the best we've seen in a sub-$60 paint.

Test 3: Bathroom Moisture Resistance Over 6 Months

We painted a master bathroom with 2 daily showers in Marquee Eggshell. After 6 months: no mildew growth, no peeling, no moisture-related discoloration. The eggshell sheen does show water spots on the wall right above the shower for a few minutes, but those evaporate without staining. For high-moisture bathrooms, we'd still recommend the Marquee Satin or Semi-Gloss for additional moisture resistance, but the Eggshell held up fine in normal use.

Test 4: Hallway Scuff Resistance (3 kids, 1 dog)

The hallway is the abuse test. Scuff marks accumulate from shoes, backpacks, dogs, suitcases. After 6 months of normal traffic: most scuffs wiped clean with a damp Magic Eraser, deeper scuffs needed touch-up paint. Test 5: 320 sq ft Living Room Repaint (Beige → Beige Variant)

The "easy" test — like-tone repaint. One coat of Marquee covered the existing wall completely, including a previous touch-up patch and a small drywall repair area. One-coat coverage genuinely works for like-tone scenarios. Total time for the room: 4 hours including cut-in. With a 2-coat paint, the same room would have taken 7-8 hours including the recoat wait.

How It Compares to Alternatives

Where Benjamin Moore Regal Select wins

Color range. Benjamin Moore offers about 3,500 colors; Behr offers about 2,500. If you've fallen in love with a specific BM color (Hague Blue, Templeton Gray, etc.), Regal Select gives you that exact formulation. Behr can color-match BM colors but the result is a Behr-formulated approximation, not the original.

Where Sherwin-Williams SuperPaint sometimes wins

Sale pricing. SuperPaint's list price is similar to Marquee but Sherwin-Williams runs frequent 30-40% off sales (typically every 4-6 weeks). On sale at $35-40/gal, SuperPaint becomes the better value — though it's still a step below Marquee on stain resistance and one-coat coverage.

Where Benjamin Moore Aura beats Marquee

Extreme scrubbability. Aura's Color Lock technology is genuinely superior on heavy scrubbing — kitchens with constant cleaning, toddler bedrooms with crayon marks weekly, etc. In our scrub tests, Aura survived 50+ wipe cycles before showing wear; Marquee showed minor sheen reduction after 30+ cycles. Where Behr Premium Plus undercuts Marquee

Price. Premium Plus is $32-38/gal vs $48-58 for Marquee — a real $15-25 savings per gallon. The trade-off: Premium Plus is a 2-coat paint, lower stain resistance, and lower hide per coat. For low-traffic rooms (guest bedrooms, closets), Premium Plus is fine. For kitchens, hallways, and bathrooms, the Marquee upgrade pays back in durability.

Care & Application Tips

A properly-applied gallon of Marquee will look fresh for 5-7 years in a typical room.

1. Stir the can with a paint stick for 60+ seconds. Marquee separates more than thinner paints due to higher solids — full stirring matters.
2. Roll with a Wooster Pro Doo-Z FTP or Purdy White Dove cover. Marquee's higher viscosity loves a good 3/8" microfiber cover.
3. Cut in only what you can roll within 30 minutes. The fast dry time means cut lines can dry before rolling — visible lap marks result.
4. Recoat within the 1-2 hour window if you need a second coat. Beyond 24 hours, sand lightly with 220-grit before recoating.
5. Clean tools immediately with warm water. Dried Marquee is harder to remove than thinner paints due to higher solids.
6. Save labeled touch-up jars in a cool, dark place. A clean glass jar with a tight-sealing lid keeps Marquee usable for 12-18 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the one-coat coverage claim actually true? Yes, with caveats. We hit true one-coat coverage in 4 of 5 like-tone repaint scenarios. The exception is dramatic color shifts (white-over-dark, dark-over-light) which still need a tinted primer or 2 coats of Marquee. Behr will refund your gallon if you can't achieve coverage with a Marquee Color Center color in one coat.

How does Marquee compare to Behr's older Premium Plus Ultra? Marquee is the upgrade replacement. Premium Plus Ultra had a one-coat-coverage marketing claim too, but the formulation was thinner and the stain resistance was lower. Marquee's pigment loading and stain-blocking polymer are both significant upgrades.

Does Marquee work for cabinets? The Marquee Eggshell is too soft for cabinet doors that get daily handling. For cabinets, use Behr Premium Cabinet & Trim Enamel or step up to Benjamin Moore Advance. Marquee Semi-Gloss can work for cabinet boxes (the part that doesn't get touched daily) but not the door fronts.

How long does Marquee actually last on the wall? With proper application, 7-10 years before a full repaint is needed in normal-use rooms. High-abuse rooms (kitchens, hallways, kids' rooms) will start showing wear at 4-5 years. Stain resistance is fully effective for the first 2-3 years and declines slowly after that.

Can I spray Marquee through an HVLP sprayer? Yes, with 5-8% water thinning. Marquee's high solids load is too thick to spray straight through most HVLPs. Why are touch-ups visible on Marquee but not on flat paint? Eggshell sheen reveals any difference in surface texture or sheen between the original coat and the touch-up. This is true of all eggshell paints, not just Marquee — but Marquee's higher solids make the effect slightly more pronounced. The fix: feather your touch-up edges with a damp cloth and let dry; if visible, blend with a roller-weight stipple instead of brushing.

GreenGuard Gold is an independent certification that verifies very low VOC emissions — under 50 g/L for VOC content and stricter limits for chemical emissions over time.
